Getting Started with kirtsy

Welcome to kirtsy!

What's a kirtsy?

kirtsy n.
1.
a gesture of respect often made by women
2. a place where women give nods, respect, and props to the coolest things out there. Where they find things, share things. News. Ideas. Information. Products. Coolness. And more and more and more. kirtsy is like that friend who always finds the best stuff... only better. Because it finds the stuff online. And let's face it, there are billions of online options...and finding something you're interested in is sometimes tricky. So kirtsy was created as a portal where skirts can be raised with respect. A spot that you can stop in to see what excellent things others have found.

Here's the basic gist:

kirtsy is made up of a number of news items submitted by users. These items typically fall into one of nine categories and are found in either the Up-and-Coming section, the Popular section or the Editors Picks section.

Each item is submitted by readers like you.

The headline on each post lets you know what the link is about. The summary gives you a little more detail. Then either click on the headline or the web address below and you can hop over to the site of the featured item.

Each posting has a number on the left side.

The numbers on the left are the number of clicks the item has gotten. When a person clicks on that story, the number goes up. The postings that get the most clicks rise to the top and become Popular. So, in theory, the best of the best are featured first. You also have the option of seeing which items received the most clicks this week, this month and this year.

Each posting also has buttons along the bottom of the post.

(Some of these buttons may not be visible unless you are logged in.)

  • Clicking "Comment" enables you to leave a comment. People love comments!
  • The "ShareThis" button allows you to email the item to a friend, or to post it to a number of other social media sites.
  • The "Save" button bookmarks this post to your "Saved" list (clever name). This list is accessible from your "Profile" page (must be a registered user).
  • You can delete stories you don't like or which are obviously spam. Click the "Lose it" button and the story will vanish before your eyes. If others click the "Lose it" button on the same post the story will disappear from kirtsy altogether. Now that's power.
  • Once you've clicked on a story's link...the "Lose it" button will change to read "Un-vote":

If you don't like the story you've just clicked to (or if it is obviously spam), you can click the "Un-vote" button, and the click-count number will revert to what it was before you clicked the story link. At this point, you may also click the "Lose it" button, which has now re-appeared.

There are three types of stories on kirtsy

Up-and-Coming, Popular and Editors' Picks.

Up-and-Coming pages

When items are first posted by users, they typically go to the Up-and-Coming section. Each item must get a certain amount of clicks to become "Popular." You can see the items that have been recently submitted and/or just need more votes by clicking the Up-and-coming tab at the top-left of the page.

Popular Pages

These are items that a number of kirtsy users have clicked and found interesting. This column is on the left-hand side of the front page.

Editors' Picks Column

This column is on the right-hand side of the front page. These items are those that any one of kirtsy's many fantastic editors have found interesting by category.

The stories are organized into nine different topic categories

  • Arts & Entertainment
  • Design & Crafts
  • Family & Parenting
  • Fashion & Style
  • Food & Home
  • Internet & Technology
  • Mind, Body & Spirit
  • Travel & Leisure
  • World & Business

You can view all the items posted in a specific category by clicking on that category's name in the brown bar at the top of the page, just under the kirtsy logo.

That's about it!

Well, actually there's a lot more you can do with kirtsy, but that should get you going. So go ahead, create a user name and log in. It's easy. It's breezy. And it's a great way to see what other kirtsies are thinking, doing, wanting, creating, experiencing.
